Amidst the vibrant tapestry of São Paulo, the Seminário Arquidiocesano de São Paulo – Nossa Senhora da Assunção stands as a quiet beacon of faith. It’s a place where young men embark on a journey of spiritual discovery, a journey guided by the teachings of the Catholic Church. The seminary isn’t just a building. It’s a crucible where the human spirit is forged and refined, where the seeds of vocation are nurtured and grown. The Seminário Arquidiocesano de São Paulo – Nossa Senhora da Assunção plays a vital role in the religious landscape of the city. It is one of the key institutions responsible for training the next generation of Catholic priests.
Located on Rua Franklin do Amaral, in the Vila Nova Cachoeirinha neighborhood, the Seminário Propedêutico Nossa Senhora da Assunção is the first step on this path. Here, prospective priests, or propedeutas, begin their formation. They come from all walks of life, drawn by a shared calling to serve God and His people. In 2024, six new young men joined the ranks of the propedeutas, bringing with them their unique experiences and aspirations. They joined the seminary under the guidance of Cônego José Adriano, the rector, and Father Juliano Maroso Gonçalves, the vice-rector. Their first days are filled with introductions to the daily rhythms of seminary life, the calendar of activities, and reflections on the four dimensions of priestly formation: human-affective, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral-missionary. The Seminário Arquidiocesano de São Paulo – Nossa Senhora da Assunção is not just about academic study. It’s about cultivating a deep and intimate relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer, about fostering a strong sense of community, and about developing a thirst for knowledge and a passion for pastoral work.
The journey continues at the Seminário de Filosofia Santo Cura D’Ars, located in Vila Albertina. This is where the propedeutas enter the Discipulado stage of their formation, delving into the complexities of human existence and the world around them. Nineteen seminarists began their studies here in 2024, guided by Father Frank Antônio de Almeida. Finally, the Seminário de Teologia Bom Pastor, located in Ipiranga, is where the seminarists enter the Configuraçao stage. Twenty-one seminarists resided here in 2024, led by Father José Adeildo Pereira Machado. This stage focuses on deepening their sense of belonging to the Church and the priesthood, refining their understanding of theology, and honing their ministerial skills. The Seminário Arquidiocesano de São Paulo – Nossa Senhora da Assunção is more than just a place of study. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith and the unwavering dedication of those who choose to answer the call to serve.
