How about discovering a spiritual haven in the heart of Tokyo? This is Sekiguchi Catholic Church. It is a place where history and faith intertwine.

Sekiguchi Catholic Church has a rich history. Its story began in 1900. Archbishop Pierre Marie Osouf envisioned a grand cathedral for Tokyo. He acquired land in Sekiguchidai. This marked the beginning of what we know today as Sekiguchi Catholic Church.

Father Jean Pierre Rey played a key role. He arrived in Tokyo in 1882. Father Rey established St. Mary Institute of French Language and Handicraft in 1887. The institute expanded and added a bakery, dressmaking room and plasterer.

In 1893, the institute’s chapel became Koishikawa St. Mary Catholic Church. It functioned primarily as a parish. Father Rey started building a new church in 1896. This Sekiguchi church was to be the largest in the Tokyo Archdiocese. His students from St. Mary Institute helped construct it. Father Rey designed the chapel in a graceful gothic style. He oversaw the construction himself.

Archbishop P.M. Osouf dedicated the new church in 1899. This dedication formed Sekiguchi Parish. The church became one of the six main churches in Tokyo. These churches aimed to support each other and expand their influence.

In 1900, a significant event took place. Lay missionaries held a five-day retreat at Tsukiji Church. Parishioners from the six churches participated in a procession of the Blessed Sacrament. Over 800 people joined and many policemen guarded the area.

Sekiguchi Church gained further importance. The Installation of Tokyo Archbishop Rey occurred here in 1912. He chose to work at Sekiguchi Church. This marked a new beginning for the Tokyo Archdiocese. In 1920, the Cathedra was transferred to Sekiguchi.

The original Sekiguchi church was destroyed. It burned down during the Second World War. But, thanks to support from Cologne Cathedral in Germany, it was rebuilt in 1964. Kenzo Tange, a leading Japanese architect, designed the new St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Today, Sekiguchi Catholic Church is the heart of the Tokyo Archdiocese. It serves as an international church. The church offers a place for spiritual rest and prayer. It welcomes foreign workers, families, residents, and visitors.

Masses at Sekiguchi Catholic Church are held in Japanese and Korean. The church provides facilities for people with disabilities. These include a sloped entrance, elevator, toilet and headphone rental system.

Sekiguchi Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith. It reflects resilience and architectural brilliance. The church continues to serve as a spiritual center for many. Its history reminds us of the enduring power of community. Its modern presence provides solace in a busy world. Take a moment to appreciate this unique blend of history and spirituality. Let’s carry forward its legacy of faith and inclusivity.
