Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai

Within the heart of Tokyo’s political landscape, a silent giant slumbered. This is the Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai, once a powerhouse within Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party. The Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai, also known as the Seiwa Kai, or even simply the Abe faction, held significant sway. Its influence resonated through the halls of power, shaping policies and determining leadership. Established in 1979 by Takeo Fukuda, the Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai began its journey as a counterforce to the economic policies of Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda. Over the decades, it grew, becoming the largest faction within the LDP. The Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai became synonymous with the name Shinzo Abe, who led the faction from 2021 until his assassination in 2022. His leadership solidified the faction’s position, earning it the nickname, the “Abe faction.” Following Abe’s death, the Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai transitioned to a collective leadership, navigating the turbulent waters of Japanese politics. This collective leadership, however, could not shield the faction from the storm that brewed in late 2023. News of a slush fund scandal, implicating several ministers and party bosses within the Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai, broke. Accusations flew, alleging that millions of yen had been funneled into illicit accounts, violating campaign finance laws. Prime Minister Kishida responded swiftly, removing all Seiwa Kai ministers from the cabinet. The National Police Agency launched an investigation, raiding the Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai headquarters. The scandal, coupled with Kishida’s decision to dissolve his own faction, proved to be the final blow. In January 2024, the Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai, once a symbol of power and influence, announced its dissolution, marking the end of an era in Japanese politics. The Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai, once a formidable force, now stands as a reminder of the ever-shifting tides of political power.
