In 1866, a seed was planted. This seed was not an acorn dropped by a majestic oak, but the first Seffner School. It was named after a prominent figure, Mr. F. P. Seffner, a leading citizen of his time. Seffner Elementary, as we know it today, stands as a testament to the growth and evolution of this once small town. Seffner’s story echoes the transformation of the town itself, from a rural landscape to a bustling suburb of Tampa.
The first Seffner School, built in 1866, served as the educational heart of the community. Imagine a small, one-room schoolhouse where children gathered to learn their ABCs and arithmetic. This initial building was a symbol of the community’s commitment to education. Fast forward to 1915, Mr. J.M. Branch donated land for a new school. A two-storied, three-room building replaced the original structure. This very building, having witnessed generations of students, still stands today as the Seffner Civic Center.
The current Seffner Elementary School opened its doors in 1961. Mrs. Aldine Griffin, the principal, proudly presided over the opening ceremony. This new school was a modern marvel compared to its predecessor, with ten classrooms, a cafeteria, and an office suite. The school’s location provided a fresh start for the burgeoning community. The expansion continued in 1967 under Principal Zeno Stalnaker. This phase added 24 classrooms, a library, a multipurpose room, and more. The school grew alongside the town.
Seffner Elementary continued its transformation. In 1991, a large renovation added a kindergarten wing and an ESE resource building. Today, Seffner Elementary continues to thrive with its mascot, the Mustangs, and school colors of blue and white. They offer a range of activities. These include Chorus, Chess club, Basketball club, Math bowl teams, BHM bowl team, Green team, and Run club. The school’s mission is to “Equip, Empower and Enrich our future leaders”, truly igniting a passion for learning. This journey from a single room in 1866 to the modern Seffner Elementary showcases the enduring spirit of this Florida community. It’s a story of growth, progress, and a commitment to providing the highest quality education for generations of Seffner’s children.
