In 2013 students voted for this new building. Ninety percent supported it. This referendum had the highest voter turnout in Canadian post-secondary history. Students clearly wanted this space.

Downstairs a food pantry supports students facing food insecurity. A wellness clinic is also available. Students can talk to someone. They can access self-harm reduction tools. Quiet time and mental health counseling are also available. Free feminine hygiene products are in all bathrooms.
A bustling club space connects students. Clubs include Hallyu Dongari. There is also the Middle Eastern Student Organization. And the Latin American club. The Second Student Centre hosts movie nights and socials. Multicultural Week features international dance and food competitions.
Dance studios are on the ground floor. Open space is available throughout the building. You might see international dances practiced near the prayer space. The building’s design emphasizes safety. Natural light and maximized sightlines are used. This ensures everyone feels safe.
The Second Student Centre’s location is central. It stands at the north end of a campus green. This makes it easily accessible to York’s 50000 students. The design incorporates sustainable initiatives. These include bicycle parking, green roofs and gender-neutral restrooms. Natural lighting is used extensively. The transparent facade reflects the students’ desire to be open and welcoming.
