Perched high above the harbour lies Seatoun Heights. A stunning vantage point it offers breathtaking views. This isn’t just a suburb. It’s a place steeped in history. A place where Maori navigators first landed.
Long before European settlement Seatoun Heights was known as Te Turanga o Kupe. This is where the legendary Kupe is said to have stepped ashore around 1000-1300 BC. He named the beach Kirikiritatangi. This refers to the sound of waves on the gravel.
Later the area became home to Maori settlements. These were strategically located on hilltops. This provided defense and access to what was then an island. The Miramar Peninsula was separated from the mainland. It was joined by the Horowhenua earthquake in 1460. The land then rose from the sea.
The modern name Seatoun comes from a Scottish village. James Coutts Crawford a pioneer settler named it. He chose this in memory of family lands in Scotland. He arrived in 1839. He established a farm on the Miramar Peninsula. He named his holdings Overtoun and Seatoun.
The development of Seatoun Heights was initially slow. Access was limited by boat. A tunnel built between 1906 and 1907 changed that. This connected Seatoun to Strathmore Park and Miramar. This development enabled the expansion of the suburb. It allowed access by electric tram to the city center. The tunnel was impressive. At the time it was considered the widest tunnel in Australasia.
Military presence also shaped Seatoun Heights’ history. Fort Dorset was built in 1911. It protected the harbour entrance. Later it was used as a film set for The Lord of the Rings. It became Seatoun Primary School in 2002.
Seatoun Heights has faced challenges. In 1926 residents complained about poor infrastructure. They highlighted inadequate roads and drainage. This shows that even in a beautiful place progress can be slow.
The area also played a role in the tragic sinking of the TEV Wahine. This was in 1968. Several lifeboats from the doomed ferry landed at Seatoun. A memorial in Churchill Park remembers the victims. It features an anchor and chains. Each link represents a lost life.
Seatoun Heights is more than just a collection of houses. It’s a place with a rich and complex history. A vibrant community. A place of stunning natural beauty. It continues to evolve. It keeps its strong links to its past. This makes Seatoun Heights unique.
