In 1856, the rhythmic clang of hammers echoed against the backdrop of the Adriatic Sea. Construction began on the Scuderie of Miramare Castle. Commissioned by Maximilian of Habsburg, these stables were more than just a place for horses and carriages. They were a testament to his vision and a symbol of the grandeur he sought to create. The Scuderie, designed by engineer Carl Junker, took four years to complete, finally opening their doors in 1860. Located along the road leading to the castle from Trieste, the Scuderie stand on a sheltered and lush site, strategically positioned away from the main residence. The design incorporates a central body flanked by two symmetrical side wings. Originally intended for horses and carriages, the Scuderie have transformed over time. During the interwar period, when the castle housed the Dukes of Savoy-Aosta, the stables underwent alterations that shifted their original appearance. Today, the Scuderie are a vibrant hub of culture and learning. Restored by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, they now host temporary exhibitions and events. Since 2018, one wing has housed the BIOdiversity MArine Centre (BioMa), an immersive museum dedicated to the Miramare Marine Protected Area. From December 21st, 2023, to June 16th, 2024, the Scuderie hosted the “Kosmos. The Sailing Ship of Knowledge” exhibition, a testament to their versatility and adaptability. The exhibition featured artifacts, instruments, and documents from the 1857 voyage of the frigate Novara, inviting visitors to step back in time and experience the thrill of scientific discovery.
