George Scott’s legacy whispers from the walls of the Scott Westney House. Here at 180 McLevin Avenue, the Scott Westney House stands as a testament to a journey through time. The story of this house starts far from here, on Sheppard Avenue East. Built around 1861, the house was first owned by Stephen Westney. Then in 1887, George Scott acquired the property, beginning a family legacy that lasted until the 1950s. Imagine the Scott family bustling about inside, their lives intertwined with the very fabric of this building. The house itself is a beautiful example of vernacular Ontario architecture. Its saltbox roof and rubble masonry speak to a simpler time. The house stood on Sheppard Avenue until 1982, when it was carefully dismantled. Each stone, each beam, was numbered and catalogued. Then, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Scott Westney House was painstakingly reassembled at its current location. It was finally reopened to the public in 1990, a tangible piece of Toronto’s history reborn. But another story places George Scott’s origins in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Born in 1795, he immigrated to Upper Canada in 1829. This version claims he built the house in 1841, not 1861, and that the Scott family lived here until 1943. It’s now nestled beside Highway 401 and McCowan Road. The Scott Westney House remains, a silent witness to the passage of time and a reminder of the families who called it home.
