Founded in 1946 Scientia Secondary School boasts a rich history. Originally named Mongkok Workers’ Children School it served the children of Kowloon’s working class. The school faced challenges. It operated in unsuitable premises. The government even considered closing it. Undeterred the school persevered. A new campus was built in Ho Man Tin. This marked a turning point for Scientia Secondary School.

The 1960s were turbulent years. The school was seen as a leftist institution. It was caught in the crossfire of the 1967 riots. The Cultural Revolution in China fueled unrest. Accusations of communist sympathies and even bomb-making circulated. The school was raided. Teachers and students were arrested. The headmistress Lam Suk-ching was among those accused of inciting violence. These events profoundly impacted the school and its community.

Despite the hardships Scientia Secondary School adapted. It transitioned from a leftist institution to a more mainstream one. The school’s participation in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination in 1980 signified this shift. In the 1980s it lobbied successfully for government subsidies. It joined the Direct Subsidy Scheme in 1991. This secured its future. The school’s achievements continued. In 1996 Scientia Secondary School won the Hong Kong Mathematics Olympiad.

Today Scientia Secondary School stands as a testament to resilience. It’s a thriving co-educational institution. It has approximately 700 students and 48 teachers. The campus on Princess Margaret Road is impressive. It includes classrooms labs an auditorium a library and even basketball courts. This modern facility contrasts sharply with its humble beginnings. Yet the school retains a strong sense of its past. Its story is a reminder of the importance of education. It shows the unwavering spirit of a community that overcame adversity. Scientia Secondary School is more than a school. It is a living monument to perseverance. It’s a symbol of hope for generations of students.
