Did you know that Science World’s iconic dome was originally built for Expo 86? That’s right this magnificent geodesic structure which now houses Science World was initially the Expo Centre. Science World in Vancouver is more than just a building. It’s a testament to human ingenuity and a celebration of science.

The dome itself is a marvel of engineering designed by the brilliant Bruno Freschi. Inspired by the work of Buckminster Fuller it stands as a symbol of Vancouver. It’s often nicknamed “The Golf Ball” because of its shape. After Expo 86 ended the city repurposed the building. It underwent a major transformation. This led to the creation of Science World which opened its doors on May 6 1989.

Science World’s history is rich with interesting facts. Did you know that in its early years it was known as the Arts Sciences & Technology Centre? This predecessor attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors before finding its permanent home in the iconic dome. The transition wasn’t easy. It involved a massive fundraising campaign. Donations from various levels of government businesses and individuals poured in. The total funding was $19.1 million. This money helped to build an addition redesign the interior and create the many engaging exhibits. A four-month preview in 1988 attracted over 310000 visitors. The Omnimax theatre a large screen theatre opened the following year.

Science World hasn’t always been called Science World. For a time it went by “Science World at Telus World of Science”. This happened because of a sponsorship deal with Telus. The name reverted to the original in 2020. The building even temporarily housed “Sochi World” a hospitality area for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Today Science World continues its mission to inspire. It offers interactive exhibits educational films and engaging outreach programs across British Columbia. Science World remains a dynamic institution. It continues to adapt and evolve to meet the changing needs of its visitors. It also receives support from a wide range of organizations. It’s an integral part of Vancouver’s cultural landscape. A visit is a journey into a world of discovery and wonder for all ages. So explore the wonders of science right here at Science World.
