“Franz Schubert to his memory” The words are etched into the base of the Schubertdenkmal. Right here in Vienna’s Stadtpark stands this beautiful monument. It’s a tribute to the great composer. It’s more than just a statue though.
The Vienna Men’s Choral Society spearheaded the project. They tirelessly raised funds for over a decade. They did this mostly through concerts and donations from other choral groups. It wasn’t easy. Their dedication is truly inspiring. This monument is a testament to their love for Schubert’s music.
Sculptor Carl Kundmann brought Schubert’s image to life. He depicts Schubert seated. A thoughtful expression is on his face. Music rests on his lap. A pen is held in his hand. He looks as though he is about to write a new masterpiece. The likeness is remarkably accurate thanks to Schubert’s friend Moritz von Schwind a well-known painter.
The base is stunning. It features reliefs created by Kundmann himself. They represent Imagination Instrumental Music and Vocal Music. They perfectly capture the essence of Schubert’s work. The entire monument was made of Carrara marble. A truly remarkable feat of artistry.
The unveiling ceremony was a grand affair. It was May 15 1872. Vienna’s Mayor Cajetan von Felder was present. Members of Schubert’s family were there too. Nikolaus Dumba a prominent industrialist and art patron gave a moving speech. He highlighted how the statue was built not from donations but from Schubert’s very songs.
