How about a story about longing and transformation? We are standing before the Ganymed sculpture. It has adorned the Bürkliterrasse by Lake Zurich since 1952. The Ganymed sculpture isn’t just a statue. It is a symbol of desires.

According to Greek mythology, Ganymede was a handsome king’s son. Zeus abducted him. Zeus then took him to the top of Mount Olympus. Hermann Hubacher completed the statue in 1952. It does not depict this abduction. Instead, it symbolizes man’s longing to ascend Mount Olympus.

Ganymede stretches out his hand. He pleads with Zeus. Zeus appears as an eagle in this depiction. He asks Zeus to take him there. The Ganymed statue captures a moment of anticipation.

The artist Hubacher emphasized his sculpture. He said it was “not a Greek Ganymed but rather a Swiss one”. The Ganymed statue aimed to connect with its local audience.

Heinrich Wölfflin initiated the commission for the design. He wanted to donate a male figure to Zurich. Zurich already had many female figures. He wanted a strict form. This form would highlight the beauty of the building.

1942 was significant. Impunity for homosexuality was introduced in Switzerland. Wölfflin recognized male beauty was underrepresented. He donated the Ganymed statue to Zurich. The city inaugurated it on June 20, 1952.

Ganymede and the eagle face each other. They are a larger-than-life bronze sculpture. Ganymede stretches his right arm. It reaches towards the sky. The eagle tries to communicate with him.

Earlier works showed Ganymede’s abduction differently. Some showed a struggling infant. Others showed a young man lifted by the eagle. Hubacher interprets the moment differently. Ganymede himself is asking Zeus to take him up.

The plinth has an inscription. It is the beginning of Goethe’s hymn Ganymed. It reads: “How, in the light of morning, Round me thou glowest, Spring, thou beloved one”. The bronze is signed by Hubacher. It is also intended for the donor Wölfflin.

Ganymede represents a male ideal of beauty. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung called it an early monument to same-sex love. Der Kreis, a Swiss gay magazine, celebrated the statue. It refuted the idea of inferiority. It became a means of struggle against prejudice.

The Ganymed statue is more than art. It is a historical marker. It reflects societal changes. It shows evolving attitudes towards male beauty. It also shows acceptance.

Consider Ganymede’s outstretched hand. It is a symbol of longing. It is a symbol of aspiration. It represents the desire to transcend earthly limitations. The Ganymed statue reminds us of our own aspirations. It reminds us of our own journeys towards self-discovery. It invites us to reflect on beauty. It asks us to reflect on desire and acceptance. As you leave, remember Ganymede’s plea. May it inspire you to reach for your own Olympus.
