Imagine stepping onto the grounds of Schloss Rutzendorf, a stately castle nestled in the heart of Vienna’s 18th district. The castle has a fascinating history stretching back to the 17th century. Unlike many other noble residences of the time, Schloss Rutzendorf didn’t just house a grand family. It served various other purposes throughout its life. For example, the castle was used as a primary school, as a youth hostel, and is now home to the Steiner/Waldorf school. Even more intriguing are the numerous stories surrounding the castle, such as the time it was owned by the Rothschild family. What you see today however, is a testament to the 18th century when Johann Heinrich Geymüller bought the estate. He had the gardens reworked into a romantic English style, adding to the charm of the castle. The castle’s beauty is more than just architecture though, it offers a glimpse into the history of Vienna which unfolds around it.
