Amidst the tranquil Lower Austrian landscape lies Schloss Achau. This grand water castle, nestled in the heart of Achau near the Mödlingbach, has witnessed centuries of history. Schloss Achau’s story begins long before its current structure. In 1484, Matthias Corvinus’s troops stormed and captured the original castle. The ownership changed hands, passing to the Rappach and Khienberger families. Subsequent owners neglected the estate, leaving it to decay. The Schloss Achau we see today was built around 1650. It was erected upon the medieval foundations of its predecessor. The man behind this reconstruction was Ulrich Grappler (Gröppler) von Trappenburg, Weihbischof of Passau. In 1732, the castle came under the ownership of the Freiherrn von Moser family. Schloss Achau’s serene setting belies a turbulent past. During World War II, the castle found itself within the newly formed 24th district of Mödling, part of Greater Vienna. Just before the war’s end in 1945, a bomb struck the castle. The resulting fire ravaged the historic structure. Despite this devastation, Schloss Achau was not forgotten. It was meticulously rebuilt, with slight alterations, preserving its legacy for generations to come. The castle stands as a testament to its resilience, a symbol of rebirth amidst the ashes of war. As you stand before Schloss Achau, imagine the lives lived within its walls, the echoes of history whispering through its halls.
