Thrill seekers rejoice. The Scenic Railway awaits. This isn’t just any railway. It’s the steepest passenger railway in the world. A Guinness World Record holder.

Built initially in the 1880s for coal and oil shale mining it hauled materials from the Jamison Valley. Imagine the miners. Their arduous work made this breathtaking view possible. From 1928 to 1945 it carried coal during the week. Weekends brought tourists seeking adventure.

In 1945 the mine closed. The Scenic Railway didn’t. Harry Hammon and his family saw its potential. They transformed it into a tourist attraction. It has been thrilling visitors ever since. Five generations of trains have carried millions of passengers. More than 25 million to be exact.

In 2013 a major upgrade took place. New tracks and carriages emerged. Glass-roofed carriages now provide panoramic views of the rainforest and Jamison Valley below. Passengers can even choose their adventure level. “Cliffhanger” for the thrill seekers. “Laidback” or “Original” for a more relaxed experience.

The 52-degree incline. The 310-meter descent. The views are spectacular. The thrill is palpable. The experience is unforgettable.
