“Nice and prosperous.” That’s what the name Sau Mau Ping means. Here at the Sau Mau Ping Road/Hiu Kwong Street Sitting-out Area, we find ourselves in a place with a story etched into its very name.

This area is part of Kwun Tong District, in eastern Kowloon. But did you know its original name was So Mau Ping?

The old name meant a place to visit one’s ancestors. This was because much of the area served as a cemetery during World War II. Understandably, this felt inappropriate for a residential area. So, it was changed to Sau Mau Ping.

Sau Mau Ping’s history isn’t without its tragedies. In 1976, a landslip caused by tropical storm Ellen killed eighteen people.

Today, Sau Mau Ping is a key part of the Kwun Tong satellite city. Major public housing estates like Sau Mau Ping Estate are here. Hiu Lai Court and Po Tat Estate are also nearby.

The United Christian Hospital is also located in Sau Mau Ping. It serves all of eastern Kowloon. It was founded in 1973.

Transportation is readily available. On Sau Road runs through Sau Mau Ping. Also easily accessible are Sau Mau Ping Road, and Hiu Kwong Street. The Tseung Kwan O Tunnel links Sau Mau Ping to Tseung Kwan O.

In the near future, access will improve even more. The East Kowloon line is planned to include Sau Mau Ping station.
