The foundation stone was laid in 1913. The ambitious project faced numerous delays, including the disruptions of World War I and economic hardships. São Paulo Cathedral finally opened its doors in 1954, coinciding with the city’s 400th anniversary. The two iconic towers, however, weren’t completed until 1967.
