“Lost in the Serra do Mar?” a voice startled me, pulling me from my contemplation of the lush green hills. I turned to see an elderly woman, her eyes twinkling with amusement. “No, just admiring São Lourenço da Serra,” I replied, taking in the picturesque view. “It’s breathtaking.” The woman smiled. “Indeed. São Lourenço da Serra has always been a place of captivating beauty, a hidden gem nestled in the southeastern part of São Paulo state.” She gestured towards the rolling hills. “Did you know this area was once part of Itapecerica da Serra? It wasn’t until 1991 that São Lourenço da Serra gained its independence and became its own municipality.” I admitted I hadn’t known that. The woman continued, “The name itself, ‘Saint Lawrence of the Mountain,’ speaks to the landscape. The southern part is dominated by the Serra do Mar mountain range, a dense forest that stretches along the coast.” She pointed towards the more developed areas. “But the central and northern parts,” she said, “are where you’ll find most of the town, nestled amongst the hills.” São Lourenço da Serra, she told me, has a rich history. Although its current population hovers around 16,000, it has seen steady growth over the years. Back in 2003, the population was just over 13,000, growing to almost 15,000 by 2004. By 2015, it had reached over 15,000, a testament to the town’s enduring appeal. As I looked at São Lourenço da Serra, I imagined the town’s early days, its connection to the larger metropolitan region of São Paulo. I pictured the dense forests of the Serra do Mar, teeming with life, a stark contrast to the gentle slopes of the northern and central areas. The woman’s words echoed in my mind, “A hidden gem.” Indeed, São Lourenço da Serra, with its captivating beauty and rich history, is a treasure waiting to be discovered.
