Imagine finding a statue in a river. That’s how the story of the Santuário Nacional de Nossa Senhora Aparecida begins. This discovery sparked a devotion that continues to draw millions.
Let’s delve into the history of this remarkable Santuário. In 1717 three fishermen were tasked with catching fish. They needed a large amount for a banquet honoring São Paulo Governor Pedro de Almeida. Despite their efforts they caught nothing. They prayed to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. One fisherman cast his net and found a statue of the Virgin Mary. On his next cast he found the head. The fishermen cleaned the statue and wrapped it in cloth. Their luck changed and they caught all the fish they needed.
