The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. A wave of quiet devotion washes over you. You stand before the Santuário São Judas Tadeu.
This isn’t just any church in São Paulo. It’s a place steeped in history and faith. Founded in 1940 by Archbishop Dom José Gaspar de Affonseca e Silva the Santuário São Judas Tadeu saw its beginnings in a humble house. This modest dwelling served as the first chapel. Father João Buescher a Dehonian priest became the first parish priest. He oversaw the transformation of this small house into a place of worship.
Initially São Judas Tadeu was relatively unknown. Father Buescher however was a dynamic and entrepreneurial man. He tirelessly promoted the saint. He distributed printed images and prayers at bus stops on trams and throughout the city’s neighborhoods. This dedication played a pivotal role in the Santuário’s growth.
The original church a provisional structure was eventually replaced. A grander more permanent church was built. It opened in 1944 and is affectionately known as the “Old Church” today. Even the saint’s image had humble beginnings. Father Buescher commissioned a wooden statue. However illness hampered the sculptor’s work. A plaster cast became the official image in time for the saint’s feast day.
The increasing popularity of the Santuário led to the construction of a new church. This impressive modern structure was completed in 1980 in time for the Santuário’s 40th anniversary. This New Church is spacious and functional with a striking circular interior. It’s a testament to the growing faith and devotion of the community.
