What if a former brewery could transform into a beacon of faith? That’s precisely the story of Santuário Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus in São Paulo. This Catholic temple stands in Santo Amaro. It replaced the old “Santuário do Terço Bizantino”.

Padre Marcelo Rossi conceived Santuário Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus. Architect Ruy Ohtake brought the vision to life. Construction spanned from 2006 to 2014. It became the second-largest temple in Brazil. Only the Santuário Nacional de Nossa Senhora Aparecida is bigger.

The land beneath Santuário Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus has its own tale. It was once a brewery spanning 30,000 square meters. In 2004, the land was purchased for six million dollars. Donations and revenue from Padre Marcelo Rossi’s books, CDs, and DVDs funded the construction.

Santuário Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus opened on November 2, 2012. A 42-meter-tall cross marks the entrance, a key architectural feature. Inside, the temple accommodates 25,000 people.

The name “Theotókos” has Greek roots. Θεοτόκος refers to Mary, the mother of Jesus. It means “Geradora de Deus” or “Portadora de Deus” in Portuguese. The Latin translation “Mater Dei” is also common.

Santuário Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus also serves as a parish. Padre Marcelo Rossi is the current Reitor since May 17, 2014.

Today, Santuário Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus welcomes visitors. It offers services and mass. The mass is held on Thursday at 8 pm. It is also held on Saturday at 3 pm and Sunday at 6 am and 9 am. It provides a space for reflection and worship. The Santuário Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus stands as a testament to faith and community.
