“Can you hear the echoes of a promise?” I ask, gesturing towards the Santuario Diocesano Santa Terezinha. This sanctuary, nestled in Taboão da Serra, isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and the power of a vow. The Santuario Diocesano Santa Terezinha stands as a beacon of hope. Its story is intertwined with the dramatic events of the 1924 Revolution. As São Paulo battled, a Salesian priest, Father Luiz Marcigaglia, made a heartfelt promise to Saint Therese of Lisieux. He vowed to build a church in her honor if his students at Liceu Coração de Jesus were spared from the bombs falling around them. Miraculously, despite the Liceu being hit, not a single student was harmed. True to his word, Father Marcigaglia began construction of a small chapel within the school grounds in 1924. The chapel, initially intended as a votive offering to Saint Therese, was completed in 1927. It served as a place of worship for twelve years before finally receiving its bell in 1939. The installation of the bell was quite an event. The ladder used nearly caused the deaths of two firemen. It broke during the process, highlighting the precariousness of the undertaking. In 1940, the chapel officially became the Parish Church of Santa Teresinha, a significant elevation from its initial status. This transformation signaled its growing importance within the community. Over the years, the Santuario Diocesano Santa Terezinha has become more than just a church. It’s a symbol of protection and a testament to a promise kept amidst chaos.
