A colossal structure dominates the skyline. This is the Santuário de Santa Isabel Rainha. Its imposing height speaks of faith and ambition. Built in stages the Santuário de Santa Isabel Rainha is a testament to unwavering dedication.

The Santuário de Santa Isabel Rainha wasn’t always this grand. It began humbly as a small chapel. Marieta Teixeira de Carvalho fulfilled a promise to her mother. She commissioned the chapel in 1943. This modest structure quickly proved insufficient for the growing community.

In 1954 the construction of a new temple began. This coincided with the Fourth Centenary of São Paulo. The Santuário de Santa Isabel Rainha’s tower was completed in 1959. The main church followed in 1961. The entire complex wasn’t finished until the early 1970s. Benedito Calixto Neto the architect behind the Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Aparecida designed this magnificent building.

The Santuário de Santa Isabel Rainha is rich in symbolism. Twelve main support columns represent Christ’s apostles. Stained-glass windows depict miracles of the patron saint Queen Isabel of Portugal. Seven arches around the altar symbolize the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The large cupola is a representation of Santa Isabel’s crown.

Initially the Santuário de Santa Isabel Rainha was even taller. A magnificent 10-meter-high crystal-encrusted cross adorned its peak. This cross illuminated at night by 87 lamps was removed in the 1980s. Fears of its collapse prompted its removal. Its whereabouts remain a mystery.

The Santuário de Santa Isabel Rainha boasts a viewing platform. This is located over 90 meters high. It offers unparalleled views of São Paulo. Visitors could once ascend via an elevator. Currently the elevator is out of service. Access is only through a challenging 407 steps. However the climb reveals inscriptions on certain floors. These include the coat of arms of São Paulo and papal symbols. The breathtaking panorama from the top includes neighboring municipalities like Guarulhos São Caetano do Sul and Santo André.

Sadly the viewing platform is closed. The parish lacks the funds for elevator maintenance. Donations are insufficient. Despite its immense tourist potential this unique attraction in São Paulo’s east zone remains inaccessible. Father Marcelo appeals for support to restore this remarkable vantage point. He hopes to bring back this amazing attraction to Sao Paulo.
