The Santa Fe Vietnam Veterans Memorial stands as a solemn tribute. It honors those who served and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War. This memorial offers a space for remembrance. It allows visitors to pay their respects to the fallen.
The Wall That Heals, a half-size replica of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, made its way to Santa Fe. It arrived at Ft. Marcy Park. Escorted by motorcycle-riding members of the American Legion Riders Post 26 and the Patriot Guard Riders, the wall’s arrival was a significant event. The Wall That Heals aimed to honor those killed in action. It also educated the public about the war. It allowed veterans to find strength and begin the healing process within their own communities.
The Wall That Heals consists of 24 powder-coated aluminum panels. Each panel bears six columns of names. Among those names are 398 New Mexicans who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. The memorial serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of conflict.
Several events took place during the Wall’s stay in Santa Fe. A welcoming ceremony featured Mayor-elect Javier Gonzales and Vietnam Veterans of America State President Henry Urioste. A candlelight vigil saw the reading of the names of the 398 New Mexicans killed in action. Members of the New Mexico Chapter of the American Gold Star Mothers led this touching tribute. Governor Susana Martinez spoke at an honoring ceremony. Tim Tetz, Director of Outreach for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, shared the history of The Wall.
The American Veterans Traveling Tribute also brought its Traveling Vietnam Wall to Santa Fe. It stood 8-feet-tall at its highest point and spanned 360-feet-long. The Cost of Freedom Tribute honored those who served in WWI, WWII, Korea, Desert Storm, Somalia, 9/11, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
