The Rodeo de Santa Fe began in 1949. Roy Butler, Austin “Slim” Green, Gene Petchesky, Paul Ragle, and Paul Rutledge had a dream. They wanted to organize a professional rodeo in Santa Fe. Their dream exceeded all expectations. Today, it is one of the top 60 PRCA Rodeos in the nation.
Each year, the Santa Fe Rodeo Grounds comes alive. Cowboys and cowgirls compete. They come from all over. They demonstrate skill and bravery. Last year’s rodeo drew nearly 500 contestants. World champions and rising stars all compete here.
But it is not just for the pros. The Santa Fe Rodeo is fun for the whole family. There are events for the little ones. Mutton Bustin’ and youth barrel racers are crowd favorites. Concessions and vendors offer treats. Beer and wine are available in all seating areas.
Interestingly enough, Santa Fe’s first cowboy competition of riding and roping actually took place in 1847. This was a year after Brigadier General Stephen W. Kearny claimed Nuevo Mexico for the United States. Some dispute this fact. However, many historians contend that it did happen.
The Santa Fe Rodeo starts each year with a parade. Floats vie for the best entry award. The parade kicks off rodeo week. Both events make an ideal family outing. Kids can enjoy a calf scramble and a carnival midway at the rodeo grounds. There is also plenty of food and souvenirs.
Competition at Rodeo de Santa Fe includes bronc riding. It includes bull riding. There is also calf roping, barrel racing, and steer wrestling. Additionally, there is a rodeo queen contest. There is also a rodeo princess contest.
Each year, the Santa Fe Rodeo holds special nights. These nights honor different groups. There is Family Night. There is also Military and First Responder Night. Plus, there is a Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night. The Rodeo de Santa Fe is a celebration of community. It is a celebration of heritage.
