Envision a bustling tent revival right here, on the corner of Manhattan and Don Gaspar Avenues. This isn’t just any revival. This is the spark that ignited Santa Fe Baptist Church. In 1917, the Baptist faith was rekindled in Santa Fe after a 50-year absence. Dr. E.B. Atwood, a key figure in the New Mexico Baptist Convention, led the charge. These tent revivals, the first in Santa Fe’s history, drew in Baptist families who yearned for a place to worship. The energy was palpable. The Santa Fe Baptist Church officially began with 23 devoted members. Soon after, the church’s first baptism took place on East Buena Vista Street, marking a significant moment for the burgeoning congregation. However, the fledgling church faced challenges. The 1918 influenza pandemic and World War I disrupted the momentum. Undeterred, the congregation persevered. They built their first permanent structure on the very spot where the tent revival took place. The Santa Fe Baptist Church continued to grow, weathering the storms of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War II. In 1955, the church acquired land on Old Pecos Trail. A new sanctuary was dedicated in 1960. Today, Santa Fe Baptist Church stands as a testament to the resilience and faith of those early members. The church’s mission remains centered on loving God and loving others. They offer connection groups, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among members. The Santa Fe Baptist Church continues to serve as a beacon of faith in Santa Fe.
