Wondering why this church stands here in Warsaw? It is the Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Fatimskiej. This sanctuary is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith and gratitude.
The Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Fatimskiej’s story starts with a miracle. Parishioners built it as thanks for saving Pope John Paul II’s life. He survived an assassination attempt on May 13 1981. This is the only church in the Warsaw Archdiocese with this dedication and purpose.
In 1982 Father Roch Walczak got permission to build a church and rectory. Cardinal Józef Glemp, the Primate of Poland, blessed the ground in 1983. Construction began in 1984. By 1985 Cardinal Glemp established the Parish of Our Lady of Fatima. He embedded a cornerstone in the church walls.
The lower church was consecrated in 1991 by Bishop Władysław Miziołek. A significant moment occurred in June 1991. Pope John Paul II blessed the Statue of Our Lady of Fatima. This happened during his fourth pilgrimage to his homeland. Bishop Zbigniew Kraszewski consecrated the upper church in September 1991. Cardinal Józef Glemp consecrated the entire church in 1997.
The Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Fatimskiej became a place of constant prayer. People prayed for the Church the Pope Poland and the Parish. In 1991 the parish dedicated itself to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. They vowed to pray the Rosary daily.
For 15 years a wooden figure of Our Lady of Fatima visited parish families. Pope John Paul II blessed this figure in 1985. Since 1989 the faithful have gathered every 13th of the month. They commemorate the Fatima apparitions with prayer and a solemn Mass. A Rosary procession follows with the statue of Our Lady of Fatima.
Cardinal Józef Glemp recognized the church’s significance. In 2000 he declared it a Jubilee Indulgence Shrine. Pilgrims came from all over Poland. Today the Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Fatimskiej continues to draw worshippers. People come from Warsaw and beyond. Pilgrims from Portugal and Belarus have also visited.
Inside the Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Fatimskiej you will discover three side chapels. One is dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Another honors Jesus the Merciful. The third is for Saint Roch. Ceramic mosaics depict the Stations of the Cross. The high altar the baptismal font and the ambo are made of marble. Wooden carvings illustrate the Mysteries of the Rosary. Stained glass windows display the luminous and glorious mysteries.
The lower church features a large wooden sculpture. It shows Jesus crucified. There is also a statue of Our Lady of Fatima. Three bells adorn the church tower. One bell bears an inscription. It says The hearts of the faithful of the Parish of Our Lady of Fatima in Warsaw Ursus made us.
In 2006 Cardinal Józef Glemp elevated the church. It became the Marian Sanctuary in Warsaw Niedźwiadek. The Sanktuarium Matki Bożej Fatimskiej stands as a testament to faith. It embodies gratitude and unwavering devotion.
