Built in 1786 Sankt Simon und Juda stands proudly in Trier-Pallien. This late Baroque church replaced an earlier structure. August Massing masterminded its construction. It’s a hall church with a polygonal choir. A unique stair tower with its own cupola houses the steps to the gallery. Sankt Simon und Juda lacks a bell tower but a small spire rises above the organ.
The interior boasts original features. These include the pulpit communion rail confessional and altars. Master craftsman Hans Matthias Propson created these elements. The altars originated from side altars of older structures. Only a few figures remain from the original Baroque and later Neo-Gothic altars. In 1949 Binsfeld crafted the stained glass windows using Rudolf Schilling’s designs.
Before its current status Sankt Simon und Juda had a rich history. Pallien belonged to St Viktor’s parish until its destruction in 1339. It then fell under St Besselich’s parish. Records show a chapel dedicated to Saints Simon and Jude existed since the 15th century. After 1803 Pallien became part of St Paul’s parish across the Mosel River. From 1929 until the construction of the new Maria Konigin church in 1960 Sankt Simon und Juda served as the parish church. After that it became a branch church.
A pivotal moment arrived in 2016. The church Maria Konigin faced collapse. It was closed and deconsecrated. This event restored Sankt Simon und Juda’s status as the parish church within the Euren parish association. Today Sankt Simon und Juda hosts approximately two masses weekly. This unassuming church in Trier’s Pallien district holds a remarkable story within its walls. A testament to resilience and faith. A place where history breathes.
