A whispered legend speaks of a rose. A twelve-petaled rose. This is the heart of Sankt Maria allerseligste Jungfrau. This magnificent church in Trier stands as a testament to faith and artistry.
Sankt Maria allerseligste Jungfrau is more than just a building. It is one of the oldest Gothic churches in all of Germany. Construction began around 1230. French masters crafted this masterpiece. They used the Gothic style. This style was already highly developed in France. The resulting architecture is a rare example of a central-plan church. The floor plan resembles a rose a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Twelve slender columns support the building. These columns represent the twelve apostles.
The west facade boasts impressive sculptures. They date back to the church’s construction in the mid-13th century. The tympanum shows the enthroned Madonna and Child. The Wise Men adore the Christ child. Shepherds also appear. These shepherds were among the first to learn of the savior’s birth.
Funding ran dry around 1243. The Archbishop’s death may have contributed. A collection in the Cologne diocese saved the project. The church was completed around 1260. It was even called the Mother Church of the Trier province.
A tall spire adorned the church’s central tower in 1492. This spire was considered a masterpiece of engineering. Sadly a storm destroyed it in 1631. The spire was never rebuilt.
The church suffered greatly in World War II. It was rebuilt between 1946 and 1951. The restoration involved much repair. Sections of masonry and many sculptures were replaced. During the restoration workers found a preserved ground plan. This ground plan dates back to the church’s original construction.
In 1951 the church was designated a Basilica minor. In 1986 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is part of the Roman Monuments. The Cathedral of St Peter is also included.
