Consider Chen Xiangbo’s meticulous flower and bird paintings. They blend traditional gongbi style with Western influences. His works are not mere depictions. They are metaphors infused with vibrant color and sharp contrast.
Then there’s Yang Mingyi’s tranquil water towns. Using subtle greens and ink he captures the serenity of the Yangtze River. His paintings evoke the feeling of a soft drizzle. Farmers walk with water buffaloes. Fishing boats drift on the river.
Li Jingkun’s freestyle ink painting The Long March is a powerful piece. It poetically interprets the historical struggles of the Chinese communists.
A significant portion of the exhibition focuses on Dehua white porcelain. These exquisite pieces known as Blanc de Chine overseas inspired European potters. They even copied Dehua’s designs creating their own hard-paste porcelain.
The Dehua kilns have a rich history dating back to the 10th century. The first Chinese porcelain to reach Europe is believed to have been made in Dehua. It’s a small jar with floral designs now in St Mark’s Basilica in Venice. Marco Polo is said to have brought it there in 1295.
The secret to Dehua’s superior white porcelain? The pure soft clay mined from nearby mountains. During the Ming Dynasty the porcelain became even more refined. Potters incorporated designs and techniques from other kiln sites creating iconic pieces like the libation cup.
Religious figurines are another highlight. Elegant representations of deities like Guanyin the Venus of China show the pinnacle of Dehua craftsmanship. Modern interpretations are included too. One eye-catching piece depicts Hongyi a celebrated Buddhist monk. The figurine’s hidden hand symbolizes his carefree past.
Jingdezhen artists also contribute. Liu Xinliang creates delicate vases and paintings. Wang Xiaofeng offers his Tang Dynasty-style white porcelain. Xiong Yuantang showcases his signature white-and-red wares.
