Sanderau

Across the Main River, the Sanderau district beckons. Sanderau is Würzburg’s oldest district outside the former city walls. It’s a fascinating blend of history and modern life. Originally known as the “Sander Vorstadt,” Sanderau’s name comes from its location on the sandy banks of the Main. This area was once a landscape of vineyards and gardens. Street names like Weingartenstrasse (Vineyard Street) and Traubengasse (Grape Alley) are reminders of this past. King Maximilian II Joseph’s decree in 1856 lifted Würzburg’s fortress status. This spurred Sanderau’s growth. Initially, wealthy citizens like professors, officials, and officers were drawn to the area. Many of the houses in these streets still have cool, damp cellars. These were originally used for wine storage and are now used by residents. The district’s expansion necessitated a new church. The magnificent Adalberokirche, often called the Sanderau Dom, was built between 1895 and 1900 to meet this need. After World War II, Sanderau experienced another surge in growth. Housing was in high demand, leading to the construction of many four-story buildings. The district’s population density increased, making it the most densely populated district in Würzburg. This density contributes to its vibrant atmosphere. Today, Sanderau is a popular area for students due to its proximity to the university and its excellent public transport connections. The Tectake Arena, a major venue for sports, concerts, and other large events, adds to the district’s dynamism. Sanderau also boasts a rich history. The Ehehaltenhaus (Marriage Preservation House), once a leper colony and later a quarantine house, stands as a testament to this past. Nearby, the baroque Neumann-Pavillon served as a summer residence for princes. These historical landmarks coexist with modern amenities. The Sanderrasen, a large sports field, and the Stadtstrand (city beach) are popular recreational areas. Several bus lines and tram lines 1 and 4 provide convenient access to the rest of Würzburg. Sanderau’s blend of old and new, its convenient location, and its lively atmosphere make it a captivating destination.
