Pui Pui the crocodile became a local celebrity. She was the unexpected star of the San Pui River in 2003. The San Pui River, also known as Yuen Long Creek, winds through Yuen Long in Hong Kong’s New Territories. It’s a network of tributaries, many originating in Tai Lam Country Park. The river meanders past villages, gathering strength from smaller streams. It flows through Yuen Long Town, then northeast into the Yuen Long Industrial Estate and Nam Sang Wai, eventually reaching the Mai Po Nature Reserve and Deep Bay. But back to Pui Pui. This 1.5-meter-long crocodile caused quite a stir when she was spotted near Nam Sang Wai. Crowds flocked to the riverbanks hoping to catch a glimpse of her. She evaded capture for six months, becoming a local legend. Finally, in June 2004, Pui Pui was caught. A naming contest, hosted by the AFCD and RTHK, resulted in her being officially named “Pui Pui” after the San Pui River. She resided at Kadoorie Farm for two years before being moved to Hong Kong Wetland Park in 2006. While the San Pui River is a vital waterway for Yuen Long, it’s Pui Pui’s story that adds a touch of the extraordinary to this peaceful river.
