What secrets lie hidden beneath the marshy fields of San Kwai Tin? San Kwai Tin, meaning “new fields”, whispers tales of a resilient clan and their unique agricultural heritage. San Kwai Tin was primarily settled by the Man clan. They trace their roots back to Man Sai-ko, who arrived in the 14th century. For generations, the Man clan cultivated a special red rice in the brackish-water paddies along the Sham Chun River. This specialized rice, unique to San Kwai Tin, shaped the clan’s identity and their relationship with the land. The Tai Fu Tai Mansion, a magnificent study hall built in the 1860s, stands as a testament to the clan’s scholarly pursuits and their rise to regional prominence. San Kwai Tin’s Man clan was one of the major forces in New Territories politics until the 1960s. They adhered to neo-Confucian principles, emphasizing proper behavior and social harmony. The mid-20th century brought an agricultural crisis to San Kwai Tin. The markets for their specialized rice, situated across the river in mainland China, became inaccessible. Unlike other New Territories farmers, the Man clan couldn’t easily shift to different crops due to the brackish nature of their paddies. This led to a wave of emigration, with many leaving for the UK to seek work in factories, foundries, and the service industry. By the 1970s, the exodus continued, with many villagers moving to urban Hong Kong or overseas. This left many traditional villages abandoned, marking a significant shift in San Kwai Tin’s social landscape. Today, San Kwai Tin holds a unique place in Hong Kong’s history, a blend of agricultural tradition, scholarly pursuits, and the enduring legacy of the Man clan. The marshlands, once teeming with red rice paddies, still whisper the stories of this resilient community and its far-reaching diaspora.
