Clutching your dim sum, gaze towards San Hing Tsuen. This unassuming village holds a secret. There are two San Hing Tsuens in Hong Kong. We’re standing before the one nestled in Lam Tei, Tuen Mun District. The other resides in Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long District. This San Hing Tsuen in Tuen Mun District is more than just a collection of houses. It’s a recognized village under the New Territories Small House Policy. This policy, a fascinating aspect of Hong Kong’s history, grants indigenous inhabitants the right to build small houses on their ancestral land. San Hing Tsuen is also part of a larger network of villages. It’s one of 36 villages represented within the Tuen Mun Rural Committee. This committee plays a vital role in local governance, giving a voice to the rural communities of Tuen Mun. For elections, San Hing Tsuen falls within the Yan Tin constituency. If you glance around, you’ll spot two neighboring villages. To the northeast lies Tuen Tsz Wai. To the southwest, you’ll find Tsz Tin Tsuen. These villages, along with San Hing Tsuen, form a small, interconnected community in the heart of Tuen Mun District. So, next time you hear the name San Hing Tsuen, remember there are two. And this one, in Lam Tei, is a small village with a big role in the local community.
