“Give me souls, take all the rest,” said Don Bosco. These words encapsulate the life and mission of San Giovanni Bosco.

San Giovanni Bosco was born Giovanni Melchior Bosco. He was born on August 16, 1815 in Becchi near Turin. He died on January 31, 1888, in Turin. He was canonized on April 1, 1934. His feast day is January 31. He is also known as Don Bosco.

Born into poverty, young John Bosco faced hardship early. His father died when he was only two. His devout mother raised him and his brothers. They were subsistence farmers and shepherds. John’s early life was marked by drought and famine after the Napoleonic Wars.

Even as a boy, John showed remarkable talents. He taught himself magic tricks and acrobatics. He would gather children. He put on shows. He shared homilies, prayers, and hymns. He felt called to the priesthood.

Poverty stood in his way. Eventually, he found a priest. Joseph Cafasso helped him with basic education. He also taught him about the spirituality of St. Francis of Sales. Bosco left home at 12. He worked odd jobs until he found Cafasso.

Ordained in 1841, Don Bosco began his work in Turin. He helped poor and neglected boys. He offered them education, religious instruction, and recreation. He established a grammar school, a technical school, and a church. He used magic tricks to draw crowds and share his message.

Don Bosco founded the Society of St. Francis de Sales in 1859. It is also known as the Salesians of Don Bosco. Before his death, it spread to other countries. He co-founded the Daughters of Our Lady Help of Christians. These are the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco. They are dedicated to similar work among girls.

His teaching methods were based on love. He did not punish the youth. This became known as the Salesian Preventive System. Don Bosco’s disciple Don Michele Rua expanded the Salesians. The order grew around the world.

Don Bosco’s mission was clear. He wanted to help young people become good Christians and honest citizens. He actively built society. He created solidarity mechanisms and social negotiations. He promoted entrepreneurship.

Don Bosco’s work began with Sunday school. It evolved into youth centers. These centers provided boarding, schooling, playgrounds, and a parish. He offered vocational training. He taught boys trades such as cobbling and tailoring. He saw play as essential to their development.

His preventive system was based on reason, religion, and loving kindness. He encouraged young people. He wanted to prevent dysfunctional behavior. Educators were present among the boys.

San Giovanni Bosco is a patron saint. He is a patron saint of youth, students, apprentices, laborers, editors, publishers, magicians, and illusionists.

Don Bosco died on January 31, 1888. The Don Bosco Movement was just beginning. Today, thousands of Salesian houses operate worldwide. They continue his mission. He left a legacy of love, education, and devotion to the young. His impact continues to inspire.

San Giovanni Bosco’s life reminds us that even in times of turmoil, one person’s dedication can transform countless lives.
