“San Giorgio? Tell me more,” a curious traveler asks. Let’s uncover the story of San Giorgio Canavese, a town with a castle that echoes through the ages. This isn’t just any building. It’s a testament to Monferrato’s history, a stone and brick narrative.

San Giorgio Canavese itself is a town in the Metropolitan City of Turin. It sits in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Once, the Novarese counts of Biandrate possessed its castle.

The Castello di San Giorgio has evolved since 859 A.D. It stands as a vibrant witness to the land’s history. The castle is classified as a Historic Architectural Landmark. Prominent Monferrato families called it home. These include the Aleramicis, Paleologis, Gonzagas and Gozzanis families.

Expanded and remodeled over centuries, it showcases Piedmontese history. The architecture spans from the early Middle Ages to today. Inside, you can view ancient art reflecting the families’ dedication. The experience immerses you in past eras. The castle boasts over twelve centuries of history. It includes traces of different epochs. The site also preserves ancient geological stratifications. It forms part of Monferrato’s geological trail.

The tour starts in the parking area and park. Visitors can see the medieval foundations from the 13th century. These foundations highlight its role as a defensive stronghold up to around 1200. The journey continues through the Italian garden and the Baroque period. This highlights its transformation from a fortress to a noble residence. Visitors then enter the southern wing. Giovanni Bollati, a renowned architect designed it during the Risorgimento.

Inside, the tour includes the main ‘piano nobile’ floor. Discover the rock-carved cellar and the ancient well. The panoramic terraces offer views over the landscape extending to the snow-capped Alps.

In San Giorgio Canavese, there was a Pininfarina car factory. This factory produced several car models. These included the Ferrari Testarossa and Peugeot 406 Coupé.

Interestingly, the body of Giorgio di Biandrate rests in the town’s church. Also in the town, the oldest hotel was the one of San Giorgio. It stood at the very ancient church of S. Pietro del Gallo. At the end of the fifteenth century Master Sebastiano di Collet held it.

San Giorgio Canavese offers a journey through time. The castle embodies centuries of history. It’s more than just a structure. It’s a living story etched in stone and brick. As you explore, imagine the echoes of noble families. Picture the artisans and laborers who shaped this remarkable place. San Giorgio Canavese invites you to step back in time.
