Did a saint really walk these streets? Look around you. Right here, in the heart of Turin, stands the San Francesco d’Assisi. This Baroque beauty whispers tales of centuries past. The San Francesco d’Assisi has witnessed Turin’s transformation. This church was already a fixture in the cityscape in the 13th century, but its appearance was far different then. Legend has it that the original structure was erected by none other than St. Francis of Assisi himself. The San Francesco d’Assisi we see today began its journey in 1602. Over time, the church underwent several renovations and expansions. The main altar, a masterpiece in marble, was completed in 1673. But it was in 1761 that the San Francesco d’Assisi truly embraced its Baroque identity. Architects Mario Ludovico Quarini and Bernardo Vittone adorned the church with its distinctive façade.
