What if fish could ride bicycles? That’s the whimsical question posed by the Salmon Cycle sculpture here at the Delbrook Community Recreation Centre. The Salmon Cycle is a 16-foot-tall kinetic sculpture. It depicts a salmon riding a bicycle. The sculpture was created by artist Bruce Voyce and installed in 2017. The artwork is made of stainless and galvanized steel, plastic, and electronics.
The Salmon Cycle was inspired by the restoration projects to improve salmon habitat along the channels of nearby Mosquito Creek. It celebrates the connection between the community and the natural environment. Voyce imagined a salmon, having already learned to climb fish ladders to navigate upstream, deciding to take things a step further and learn to ride a bicycle. The sculpture is interactive. You can turn the steering wheel and watch as the salmon pedals faster and faster. The sculpture is powered by a unique water collection system that reuses the facility’s runoff water for the garden landscape.
