In 1997, a transformation began at the Salaheddin Islamic Centre. Imam Aly Hindy took the helm. He steered the Salaheddin Islamic Centre from a modest mosque into a vibrant community hub. The Centre, located in Scarborough, Toronto, has become much more than a place of worship. It’s a testament to the power of community. The Salaheddin Islamic Centre now offers a wide range of services. These include youth programs, Quran lessons, and funeral services. They also host basketball camps, marriage and family counselling, and Islamic conferences. World-renowned speakers often grace these conferences, bringing a global perspective to the local community. The Salaheddin Islamic Centre even houses a school. Safa and Marwa Islamic School provides education for grades 1-12. They follow the Ontario curriculum, a standard recognized and accepted by universities worldwide. A new facility for the school opened in Mississauga in 2020. This expansion was made possible by a US$6.6 million project. Funding came from the Islamic Development Bank. The project converted a former office building and warehouse. Now, it serves as a modern learning space for 850 students. The Salaheddin Islamic Centre has also seen its share of controversy. Some worshippers have been accused of ties to terrorism. The Centre itself has been scrutinized. However, a court ruling in 2008 acknowledged the presence of individuals with “questionable activities”. But the court maintained that this didn’t “taint the centre”. The Salaheddin Islamic Centre continues to serve the community. It stands as a beacon of faith and resilience.
