A treasure unearthed. Three hundred and fifty silver coins. Imagine their gleam. These coins whispered tales of George of Podebrady and Maximilian II kings of Bohemia. They lay hidden within the very walls of the Saints Simon and Jude church.

This isn’t just any church. It’s the Saints Simon and Jude a testament to Prague’s rich history. Originally a small chapel in 1354 it grew. It started as part of a hospital founded by Sir Bohuslav of Olbramovice. Bishop Arnost of Pardubice a close friend of Emperor Charles IV sanctified it. He dedicated it to the biblical missionaries Saints Simon and Jude.

The Saints Simon and Jude church expanded significantly. Non-Catholic churches rebuilt it before 1620. It rivaled even St Vitus Cathedral the main cathedral of Prague. After the Battle of White Mountain the Order of the Merciful Brethren took over. They extensively rebuilt and rededicated the church in 1632.

About a century later another transformation occurred. The church gained its Baroque appearance. Andreas Wambesser’s pipe organ was installed. Its unique sound attracted renowned composers like Mozart and Haydn. They played this very organ. Ferdinand Maximilian Brokoff contributed to the church’s artistic splendor creating some of the statues before 1723. A tower was added during this period. The interior was richly decorated with altars and statues.

The church underwent yet another renovation between 1989 and 1993. This restoration by the City of Prague uncovered the treasure of coins. It also added modern comforts like underfloor heating allowing for year-round services.

Today the Saints Simon and Jude church thrives. The Order of the Merciful Brethren of John of God maintains it. The Prague Symphony Orchestra uses it as a concert hall for chamber music. Their Baroque music concerts are acclaimed for their setting and quality. The church also hosts other events audio and video recordings and broadcasts. An exhibition showcasing its history architecture and social events is a permanent fixture in the foyer. The Saints Simon and Jude church is a living history a harmonious blend of past and present. It’s a place where history resonates within the very stones and the music echoes through the ages.
