Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral was founded way back in 1904. It served the city’s growing Greek Orthodox population. It wasn’t always this grand structure. For years the congregation met in temporary spaces. They finally built their own church near 8th and L Streets NW. That building was dedicated in 1924. It’s now the site of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
The cathedral you see today began its journey in 1951. Construction on this stunning edifice at 2815 36th Street NW started then. The congregation started worshipping here in 1955. The construction was mostly done. Yet the interior decoration wasn’t complete. Work began on that in 1965 and continues to this day.
The Neo-Byzantine style is unmistakable. The central dome soars to an impressive 80 feet. That’s 24 meters. The design mirrors the architectural style of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. But this Saint Sophia is named not for a saint but for the Holy Wisdom of God. The cathedral is under the direct jurisdiction of the Archbishop of America in New York City. It serves as his cathedral in Washington.
The cathedral’s consecration was a major event. It happened in May 2015. Archbishop Demetrios of America presided. Relics of three saints were interred in the altar. These were Saint Panteleimon Saint Barbara and Saint Kyrikos. This act commemorated early church worship in the catacombs.
The cathedral is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a hub for the community. An education center was added in 2004. It houses classrooms a library and a ballroom. This center is called the Frosene Education Center. It reflects the significant contributions of donors like Frosene Trakaliotis Michels.
