That humble building, acquired in 1893 to establish Saint Peter Claver Catholic Church, was tragically destroyed by arson just days after opening its doors. But from the ashes rose an even stronger resolve. A new property was secured on the corner of Scott and Governor Streets, right in the heart of Tampa’s black community. Here, Saint Peter Claver Catholic Church blossomed. It became a beacon of hope, offering not just spiritual guidance but also quality education for African American children.
