Is it true what they say about the rugby team here? That’s often the first question I get when we stand before Saint Patrick’s College. This historic institution, founded in 1885 by Archbishop Francis Redwood, has a legacy that extends far beyond the rugby pitch. While it’s true that Saint Patrick’s College boasts a remarkable 17 All Blacks alumni, including two All Black captains, there’s so much more to this school than just sport. The college, affectionately dubbed “St Pat’s Town,” moved to its current location near Kilbirnie Park in 1979. But did you know that its roots are firmly planted in central Wellington? Originally located on Cambridge Terrace, the school made a strategic move in 1931. The boarding section relocated to become St Patrick’s College, Silverstream, allowing the city college to accommodate a growing number of day students. This historic decision not only expanded access to Saint Patrick’s College’s esteemed education but also fostered a unique bond and friendly rivalry between the two institutions. Though miles apart, they share a common heritage and even an alumni association, demonstrating the enduring spirit of brotherhood instilled in every student who passes through the hallowed halls of Saint Patrick’s College.
