How can a church stand unless it be built upon a solid foundation? That is the question that echoes as we approach Saint Matthew Missionary Baptist Church.
Founded in February 1926 by Reverend Matthew Myers, Saint Matthew Missionary Baptist Church began its journey at 1014 E. Yukon Street. Reverend Myers and the founding members came from Spring Hill M.B. Church. The original church was a small wooden structure on land donated by Rev. Myers.
From 1926 to 1955, Saint Matthew was led by several pastors. They included Rev. Matthew Myers, Rev. Scott, Rev. Bly, and Rev. Dukes. In 1954, Rev. C.C. Carr began his leadership at Saint Matthew. The church membership grew and included families like Carr, Davis, Harriston, and Sheppard.
In 1958, Rev. Carr led the construction of a concrete block structure. At that time, several auxiliaries existed. These included Trustees C. Sheppard and D.O. Harriston. Also Deacons Willie Williams and George Jones. The Usher Board was led by Dwight Curry. Sis. Ella Carr led the Home Mission. Choir #1 was led by Sis. Lillie Mae Curry. Choir #2 was led by Sis Ossie Mintos. Sis. Miles was the Sunday School Teacher.
After Rev. Carr’s time in 1961, Rev. G. E. Edwards became the pastor until 1968. Rev. L.W. Williams pastored from 1968 to 1970. Rev. G. E. Edwards returned in 1970. He served faithfully for over 34 years. Under his leadership, the church expanded. They added office space, a finance room, and a dining facility. Additional property was purchased across the street and behind the church.
Ministries expanded to include Deacon and Deaconess Boards. The Choir ministry grew to four choirs. The Usher ministry grew to four groups. They added a Healthcare Ministry, Scholarship Program, and Youth & Children department. An Outreach Ministry was also established. A building fund was created to plan a larger sanctuary.
In 1996, Rev. Edwards passed away. In August 1996, Rev. W.J. Haynes became the pastor. He served until August 2004. Under Rev. Haynes’ leadership, the church accomplished much. The Building Fund grew and led to the purchase of the current facilities at 1006 S. 50th Street. The name was changed to New St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church. Church School attendance grew. The youth department was restructured. Ministry leaders were called Directors. The church was trained using ETA curriculum. A summer camp and a Substance Abuse Ministry were established. A non-profit was developed for community projects.
Rev T. R. Coverson led the church from July 2005 to December 2005. He showed a great love for family values and enthusiasm to teach the Word of God.
On November 29, 2006, Rev. Alec F. Hall became the pastor of New St. Matthew. Since then, church membership and finances have greatly increased. New air conditioners were purchased for the sanctuary. The sanctuary was painted. Other improvements were completed including the renovation of the Rev. G.E. and Bertha Edwards Chapel. The church’s business transactions are open for review. Quarterly business meetings are held.
Under Pastor Hall’s leadership, five deacons and five deaconesses have been ordained. The Youth Department has been revamped. A young adult ministry has started. There is a Praise Team, Praise Dancers, and a Drama Ministry. The Women’s Ministry is thriving. A Trustee Ministry was created. The church has a website. Church services are broadcast live each Sunday. A new sound system was installed. Crosses are displayed in the sanctuary. The foyer has been redecorated.
In October 2011, the mortgage for the current property was paid off. The church celebrated owning the property with a mortgage burning service. New St Matthew Missionary Baptist Church is a Bible based church. It exists to exalt Jesus Christ, equip believers, and win the lost. It serves the greater Tampa Bay area and communities in need worldwide.
Today, New St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church continues to serve. It offers a welcoming congregation, preaching centered on the Word of God, and ministries for every age. It provides a corporate outlet for praise and worship. The history of the church is a testament to its solid foundation and commitment to the community. As we stand here, we recognize the journey of faith and service that has shaped this vibrant church.
