Saint Marys High School is more than just classrooms and hallways. It’s a place steeped in history and tradition. The school’s story begins in 1946. Saint Marys High School was added to the already existing church and elementary school. The parish had been around since 1853. The Redemptorists arrived in Baltimore then. The elementary school was founded in 1862.
Sharing grounds with St. Mary’s Church connects the high school to a rich past. The Charles Carroll House nearby adds another layer of historical significance. Originally, School Sisters of Notre Dame lived in a convent here. The building is now a library and computer labs. The classrooms are based on a traditional corridor basis with lockers along the walls.
C. Mason “Daffy” Russell is a legend here. He was a longtime coach. The gymnasium bears his name. Saint Marys High School is in a dense urban area. It lacks on-site athletic fields. The school uses fields at Bates Middle School and Germantown Elementary School for practice. In 2007, Saint Marys High School built its own field. It is located at St. John Neumann Church on Bestgate Road. It is about two miles from the campus.
Academically, Saint Marys High School shines. It offers AP and Honors classes. In 2016, the school implemented a 1:1 iPad program. The St. Isidore Cyber Program focuses on STEM. It gives students opportunities for internships. This program helps students explore science, technology, engineering, and math.
Student life here is vibrant. The Crabnet is the school newspaper. There are 25 clubs. These include a sailing team and Model UN. Campus ministry plays a big role. Each year, students attend a retreat. Seniors participate in Kairos.
Athletics are a big deal. The Severn School is a major rival. “Battle Lax” is the name of the lacrosse match between the two schools. Their football game is called “The River Classic.” Saint Marys High School participates in the MIAA for boys’ sports. It participates in the IAAM for girls’ sports. Sports include cross country, field hockey, and football in the fall. Winter brings basketball, ice hockey, and swimming. In spring, students can play baseball, lacrosse, golf, tennis, and track.
Many notable alumni have walked these halls. Michael E. Busch was a former Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates. Chuck Bresnahan was a defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. Henry Ciccarone is a Hall of Fame lacrosse coach for Johns Hopkins. These are just a few of the successful people who started here.
Saint Marys High School is located on Duke of Gloucester Street. It is connected to the elementary school by a hallway. It shares a library building with the elementary school.
