Amidst the bustling heart of Washington D.C., stands Saint Marys Convent, a place steeped in history and faith. Saint Marys Convent, while not directly mentioned in the historical records I have access to, shares its location and early history with Saint Mary, Mother of God Catholic Church. This magnificent church, originally known as St. Mary’s German Catholic Church, emerged in the mid-19th century as a sanctuary for German Catholic immigrants. In 1845, in the basement of St. Matthew’s Church, a small group of German Catholics began to dream of a place where they could worship in their native tongue. Their dream began to materialize thanks to the generosity of General John Van Ness. He donated a plot of land on 5th Street, between G and H Streets NW, with one stipulation: a church must be built within a year. The first church, a testament to the community’s determination, was quickly erected. Later, in 1891, a new church arose on the same site. This grand structure, designed by architect E. F. Baldwin, embodied the spirit of German Gothic architecture. Its blue stone and granite facade, highlighted by a soaring central tower and spire, stood as a beacon of faith. Saint Marys Convent likely shares this rich history. While its exact connection to the church remains unclear in my sources, its presence in this historically significant location suggests a shared narrative of faith and service. The church itself boasts stunning artwork, including a sculpted Carrera marble altar rail and a magnificent triptych window depicting angels holding the “Mater Dei” banner. These gifts, from the prominent Kolipinski family, add to the church’s grandeur. The church became known for its Monday Novenas dedicated to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, started in the 1930s. These novenas became so popular that during World War II, crowds spilled out into the streets, a testament to the enduring power of faith. Saint Marys Convent, nestled in this vibrant setting, stands as a silent witness to the unwavering devotion that shaped this corner of Washington D.C.
