“A church built on a $1,200 plot of land?” you might scoff. But let me tell you the story of Saint Martins Evangelical Lutheran Church in Annapolis. It’s a story of humble beginnings, resilience, and unwavering faith. Saint Martins began in 1874 as a dream shared by a group of German businessmen, farmers, and a circuit-riding Reverend named Ernest Idle. They pooled their resources and purchased a modest plot on Francis Street for the grand sum of $1,200. Can you imagine? A church rising from such a humble investment. This was the seed of Saint Martins Evangelical Lutheran Church. The cornerstone was laid in 1875, marking the official birth of this congregation. The church served as a spiritual anchor for the German community, with services conducted in their native tongue. However, tragedy struck in 1902 when a fire ravaged the interior of the brick structure. Undeterred, the congregation rallied, restoring the church and adding a parsonage. Saint Martins continued to evolve with the changing times. In 1921, recognizing the shifting demographics, English replaced German as the language of worship. Anniversaries were marked by expansion and renewal. The 50th anniversary brought a new annex, the 75th a renovated worship center. In 1962, Saint Martins embarked on a new chapter, laying the cornerstone for a new building on Spa Road. This marked a significant transition, symbolizing growth and adaptation. The congregation continued to expand its outreach, embracing programs like Meals on Wheels and partnering with organizations like the Light House Shelter. Saint Martins even ordained its first woman pastor in 1979, demonstrating its commitment to inclusivity. Throughout its 150-year history, Saint Martins Evangelical Lutheran Church has consistently lived up to its values of service and community engagement. From its humble origins on Francis Street to its current location on Spa Road, the church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and a $1,200 dream.
