Founded in 1972 Saint Mark Orthodox Church stands as a beacon of faith in Bethesda Maryland. It’s a welcoming parish part of the Orthodox Church in America Archdiocese of Washington DC. The church proudly serves a diverse community. Members come from various ethnic and religious backgrounds.
Saint Mark’s first Divine Liturgy was held on June 11 1972. The parish is dedicated to teaching Orthodox Christianity in English. It actively seeks to reconnect those who have drifted from Orthodoxy. It also welcomes those new to the faith. The church’s history is rich with stories of growth and community.
The Very Reverend Gregory Safchuk and his family joined Saint Mark in 2000. He brought years of pastoral experience. Father Timothy Perry also served the parish. Very Reverend Mark W Koczak was another important figure. These dedicated priests shaped the spiritual life of the church.
Saint Mark’s renowned choir has been a cornerstone of its worship. For years talented directors have led the choir. They provide beautiful music for services weddings baptisms and memorial services. The church offers religious education for children aged 5 to 18. About 90 children are enrolled. The Church School promotes understanding of Orthodox Christianity. It aims to foster a Christian life. Adult and young adult Bible studies provide further opportunities for spiritual growth.
The Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America (FOCA) has a strong presence at Saint Mark. Chartered in 1995 the FOCA chapter actively involves the community. It supports numerous charitable and philanthropic causes. Their work reflects the church’s commitment to service. New members are always welcome.
