“A sanctuary built on service.” That might well describe Saint Luke’s Methodist Church here in Washington D.C. Saint Luke’s, part of the Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Parish, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a beacon of hope, actively working to transform lives within the community. The church’s history reveals a deep commitment to serving others, particularly those experiencing homelessness and hunger. Originally known as St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, this congregation made history as the first church in Ward 3 to establish a transitional shelter for homeless men. This dedication to service continues today through St. Luke’s Mission Center. In 2009, St. Luke’s merged with Metropolitan Memorial, and the church building became the mission center for the parish. The mission center partners with organizations like Friendship Place, further extending its reach to those in need. The center’s Campus Kitchen Project, part of DC Central Kitchen, recovers food from local restaurants and delivers meals to Friendship Place. They also operate a 24-bed hostel for college students visiting D.C.
