“A cornerstone of faith. That’s Saint Lukes Lutheran Church” The church stands before you a testament to community. Its story began not in grand cathedrals but in humble beginnings. In 1939 the suburbs of Washington DC were booming. A survey revealed a need for a mission. Pastor Milton Bieber met with dedicated individuals. They envisioned a place of worship. Their first service was held in the Masonic Hall in Silver Spring. Sixty-three people attended. The congregation grew. On January 14 1940 Saint Lukes Lutheran Church was officially organized. It joined the Maryland Synod. Growth necessitated a new building. Land was purchased at Highland and Colesville Roads. Construction began in 1944. Dedication took place in 1946. The church continued to flourish. A Christian Education Building was dedicated in 1954. A Christian Day School opened in 1957. A Fireside Room and Music Room were added. Land near Frederick Maryland was acquired for a conference and retreat center. Today Saint Lukes boasts over 1900 members. It has diverse programs for all ages. It supports a Latino ministry La Sagrada Familia. It’s more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living community of faith. A place where the love of Jesus Christ is proclaimed. A place that’s welcomed countless souls through its doors. Saint Lukes Lutheran Church continues to serve its community. It is a vital part of the Washington DC area.
